Confluence versus Convergence – September 2026 M&A Activity

Historically, wide-format printing expanded outward from relatively straightforward signs, banners, and point-of-purchase graphics. Then several adjacent streams began flowing together: display graphics, trade-show exhibits, environmental graphics, retail décor, architectural signage, dimensional fabrication, branded interiors, installation, and, increasingly, management of the entire physical customer, employee, and visitor experience.

The printing industry has been described as undergoing convergence for the past decade or so. For example, commercial offset printing companies have been adding wide-format printing, mailing, promotional items, and other services that create a “one-stop shop” experience for customers that require a full suite of marketing production services.

In the segment of the printing industry that utilizes digital wide-format technologies, we observe a different trend: the confluence of previously distinct service disciplines, each serving different end purposes, coming together to create something larger, all with digital wide-format printing technologies at their core.

Duggal Acquires Design to Print

Among the more significant September transactions was Duggal Visual Solutions’ acquisition of Design to Print*, with operations in St. George, Utah, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Design to Print (DTP) had evolved well beyond the conventional definition of a wide-format printer. DTP's work includes trade shows, exhibits, retail programs, and experiential environments, supported by capabilities such as proprietary SEG systems, structural fabrication, project management, installation, and de-installation. The company still puts ink on substrates, lots of it, but describing Design to Print simply as a printer misses much of what its customers are actually buying. The printed piece is often only one component of a much broader deliverable: the ability to create, transform, and execute a physical space while managing the fabrication, logistics, installation, and immovable deadlines that frequently accompany complex event and experiential work.

Duggal likewise operates well beyond the traditional definition of a printing company. Its capabilities span large-format and commercial print, fabrication, digital signage, experiential displays, creative services and installation, with the ability to manage large-scale programs and rollouts. The combination therefore brings together two companies that have moved substantially upstream and downstream from the central production process.

Design to Print adds complementary capabilities, people, customer relationships and specialized expertise, while extending Duggal’s geographic reach through the acquired western operations. The strategic rationale involves substantially more than adding printing capacity or another book of business. In a mature print market, the ability to design, fabricate, manage and execute increasingly complex visual environments represents a capability that can be far more difficult to replicate than simply purchasing another piece of equipment.

Architectural Graphics Move Toward Center Stage

Three other September transactions, acquisitions of architectural graphics companies, further illustrate the confluence theme.

Visual Graphic Systems, headquartered in Carlstadt, New Jersey, acquired Nashville-based ImageLife. VGS described the transaction as expanding its architectural-signage capabilities, manufacturing capacity, and regional service platform while establishing its first manufacturing and operational presence in the Southeast.

Creative Sign Designs, based in Tampa, Florida, acquired Rite Lite Signs in Concord, North Carolina. Rite Lite is a full-service architectural sign manufacturer with design, fabrication, and installation capabilities. Creative Sign Designs specifically cited expanded manufacturing capacity and broader geographic reach throughout the Southeast as benefits of the combination.

ColorLab in Greenville, South Carolina, also changed ownership during September through a management-led transaction in which a longtime executive leading the graphics business acquired it from 3D software company TPM in a carve-out transaction. The company operates in the wide-format and architectural graphics arena, focusing on bringing informational and decorative graphics into corporate, educational, and faith-based interior environments.

From Wide Format to the Experience

“Wide-format” was originally a useful description of the business segment because the technology itself differentiated these companies. The ability to digitally produce large graphics on an increasing variety of substrates opened markets that conventional commercial printers could not easily serve.

Over time, however, wide-format equipment became more widely available. Technology improved, costs came down, and the capability itself became less differentiating.

As far back as 2018, we were noting that the wide-format segment was maturing, competition and margin pressure were increasing, and differentiation was becoming more important. Companies with specialized expertise in event graphics, complex installations, and management of the entire process stood apart from companies that primarily sold just printed output.

In January 2025, we explored the transition occurring in the wide-format business as the Riverside Company acquired Vomela. (For more see: The Target Report: Print Everything Everywhere All at One Place – January 2025.) It was a hot market for wide-format business owners. The next month, Moss acquired another UK-based company that produced wide-format graphics for experiential spaces. We traced Moss’s evolution from a pop-up tent company to a global provider of what it calls “immersive branded environments.” (For more see: The Target Report: Think Outside the Rectilinear – February 2025.)

The following month, we explored the next stage of that evolution as Wasserman acquired bluemedia and Impact XM acquired Touch Associates. The increasingly complex nature of these companies, built through acquisitions, clearly indicated that event graphics had moved well beyond simply producing banners and signs. What emerged in these cases were hybrid companies: combining visual communications, audio elements, logistics, experience design, and brand execution. (For more see: The Target Report: Experiential Graphics Under the Lights – March 2025.)

Confluence

As production technology becomes more accessible, differentiation, and therefore corporate value, increasingly depends on capabilities that are harder to duplicate: design expertise, project management, engineering, fabrication, installation networks, logistics, specialized market knowledge, recurring customer programs and the institutional experience required to execute complicated projects correctly and on time.

Plain-vanilla wide-format capacity has matured. At the same time, specialized providers that profitably combine printing with fabrication, installation, architectural signage, experiential execution, and other difficult-to-replicate services continue to attract buyers.

Market leaders in wide-format printing have added adjunctive services that solve customer problems in unique and distinct ways, rather than simply adding services in an elusive search to be one-stop shops. September’s transactions suggest that the evolution of wide-format printing continues, or perhaps more accurately, the confluence continues.
